Wausau Superfund Site on Wisconsin River to Undergo EPA-Approved PFAS Groundwater Testing

According to information from the DNR’s BRRTS database, the superfund site along the Wisconsin River in Wausau will undergo PFAS groundwater testing in the spring of 2026. The PFAS Groundwater Workplan can be viewed on the DNR’s website and is embedded below. The EPA approved the PFAS testing plan for the superfund site in a February 4, 2026 email to environmental consultants.

The workplan for the PFAS groundwater testing indicates that if PFAS is found in the initial samples, further sampling will be conducted until the groundwater contamination plume is fully delineated. Apparently, proposed testing locations exist on both the east and west sides of the Wisconsin River. Historically, sites like Wausau Chemical, a former city dump, and others had existed on the banks of this general river area. The proposed PFAS testing locations can be viewed in Figure 2 of the workplan: “PROPOSED PFAS SAMPLING LOCATIONS.”

This superfund site was tied to VOC contamination in the City of Wausau’s drinking water in the 1980s.
