3M Greystone’s PFAS Site Investigation Work Plan Not Approved by DNR
- 3M Company, PFAS
- August 19, 2025
According to a letter from the DNR to 3M Company dated August 11, 2025, state regulators did not approve the Scope of Work (SOW) that 3M submitted to the department for the objective of further refining delineation and characterization of PFAS at the Greystone site. That letter can be downloaded and reviewed directly from the DNR’s website, and is also embedded below in its entirety.
The DNR stated that it did not approve the Site Investigation Work Plan (SIWP) because the “DNR does not believe the proposed monitoring well network will achieve the stated objective, nor is it comprehensive enough to define the degree and extent of PFAS contamination identified at the Site.” Regulators went on to convey that additional “delineation must include a broader area to properly define the extent of contamination at the Site.”
In the recent past, both the state DNR and federal EPA have been involved with looking into whether any possible associations exist between 3M’s historical activities and some of the PFAS-contaminated groundwater in Central Wisconsin, from the Wausau superfund site along the Wisconsin River to the corporation’s Greystone facility.
